Print-N-Go Math Stations

Happy New Year friends! 2016! Sixteen?! Do you remember 1999 and all of the hullabaloo about it turning 2000? LOL! Think how far we have come and how far technology has come since then! I would like to say that this is a really smart lead in to my post...not so much! Just chattin' with ya...and showing my age (Oyy)

If I had one word to describe my goals for 2016 it would SIMPLIFY! My life (teaching and home) can be crazy hectic...because of me!!! I totally do it to myself. I need to Let it Go (cue Elsa now)! I like the cuteness! Let's face it, who doesn't like the cuteness, right?! However, my sweet little Kinders never comment on the Math or Literacy stations that I spend hours on! Well, they might say, "This is fun!" or "Can we please play...." but they never say, "Geez Mrs. Lee the clip art, the colors, the way you cut out the laminating...is simply perfect!" Not one time people! So, I am asking myself why do it? WHY?!

I want to make a complete new line of products that are Print-N-Go! That's it! Print. And. Go. BAM! I am starting with Math Stations. First up, is my Race to 20, Race to 50, and Race to 100 games! These are so easy to teach and easy to use (simplify people!) They are black and white...no color ink! They don't need to be laminated! EASY!

Guided Math Freebie!

Hello! Kristen here from A Day In First Grade!  Since I was stuck in my house for two days due to the MASSIVE blizzard, I was able to prep all of my February math centers for my kindergarteners and plan my guided math groups for the next three weeks. On my Facebook page, I had asked y’all what you wanted me to blog about and guided math was one of the topics. On my blog, I wrote all about how I schedule and plan my math block. To be honest, the key to success in my math block is the schedule that I use. All of our math lessons hinge on a simple teaching model that I love: I do, we do, you do.  During our math time I use this model to set up my schedule. “I do” is the first and shortest time {whole group teaching}, “we do” and “you do” take up the majority of our time.

I believe that students need to experience math to truly get it. In order to help my students develop number sense and a solid foundation with their math skills, I make sure that our activities include hands-on materials, interactive lessons, and centers where students can explore and manipulate what they are learning. All of the centers that I create are made with intentionality and are exactly what my students need to work on each month. I base each center off of my curriculum’s scope and sequence and pacing guide along with the common core standards that students need to master by the end of the year. I try to keep some of the games similar while adding in a few new ones each month to keep things fresh and fun. I use the centers not only as my students “you do” activities but also as the basis of our "we do" guided math lessons. In doing this, it only requires me to prep the month’s centers and then my math planning is practically finished for the month!

Hands-on math fun ... FREEBIE!

My students are VERY hands-on.  They love using a variety of manipulatives to solve lots of problems - especially math ones!

I created these math cards for students to show 1:1 correspondence for each number 1 through 10.

Little did I know that there was a whole lot more learning happening....

Students were busy using the cards to represent numbers well past 10!

Daily 5 Second Edition~Book Study {Chapter 8}

The Daily 5 Second Edition has not only refreshed my memory of Daily 5, but has reinforced what I've known all along…you have to be flexible!

Chapter 8 is a great chapter all about the Math Daily 3.  It's full of ideas and suggestions to make your Math Block better for you and your students!

Meet Ms. White from First Grade Blue SKies

I am super excited to be an author for Freebielicious with my amazing friends!

Let me introduce myself: I am Jennifer White, the teacher behind First Grade Blue SKies.  

I am married to a great guy, Shawn...

I have three awesome kids…

 Jack and Maggie….and Emma (it is impossible to get a good picture of all three at the same time…Can I get an Amen from moms of multiple kids???)

This is my 17th year to teach and I have taught Kindergarten, First, and Third.  I teach in a rural, public K-12 school in Alabama.  I have 16 students this year, and some are kids I taught from last year when I was in Kindergarten!  (I wish looping was a possibility every year for me!)

I love to read and watch British mysteries…I am a whodunit kind of girl.  

(insert Elementary, BBC's Sherlock, and Masterpiece Mystery…not to mention Poirot, Marple, Nero Wolfe, and Dave Robicheaux)  I think I may have a problem!

My gift to you, since you've hung in there all the way to the end hearing about my somewhat dull life, is a freebie and tips for playing Heads or Tails (from Investigations) where kids use pennies to explore number combinations.

Use paper plates when kids are dropping their pennies to prevent them from falling off their desks.

Use containers from the Dollar Store to have your pennies divided up already so that any time you want to play the game, the pennies are already in groups of ten.  You can have kids take out pennies to change the amount or add additional pennies to make a larger number.

Here is a recording page to change things up a bit from the norm…directions are included, so even if you don't use Investigations, it will work for you  (and you can choose any number to explore the combinations with, so it can work k-2).
