Sight Word Activities

It is always difficult teaching sight words to students.  I want to share with you a couple of ideas on how to engage students in memorizing sight words!  I find that the more ways I can get the students to interact with the words, the quicker they memorize them.

I like to make little sight word cards to use in a variety of different ways.  I make them at the beginning of the year, laminate them, and we use them all year long.  This is a simple idea of using a cookie try and magnetic letters to build the words.  The students grab a card, and write out the word using the letters.

Students love writing words in sand.  To make the sand box, I put a piece of blue paper at the bottom of a pencil box, then I poured in a thin layer of sand on top.  The students take a pencil and write in the sand using the eraser end.  You don't need to put a piece of paper in the bottom of the pencil box, but I wanted the bottom of the box to POP when the students were writing in the sand.

One of my favorite sensory activities is making a sensory shaker.  I used a paint cup from Lakeshore, pom poms, and wooden cubes that I wrote sight words on them.  The students shake the cup, see a word inside, and write down the word the see!

My students also love using paint dabbers (sold at most craft stores, target, teacher stores).  I printed off the words in bubble font, and the students stamp the inside of the word!

Good luck teaching sight words in your class!

Christmas sight word match

We have been working away on our sight words all year and I'm happy to say that almost all my students know all the pre-primer Dolch word list.  In the new year we will be starting on the primer list.

My students really enjoy sorting their words and this is the perfect Christmasy activity for the job.  The kids don't even know they are still working.

FREE Printable Sight Word Labels

Are you busy getting ready for back to school? Ready to add a little fun and flair to your classroom Word Wall? Or maybe just help your students associate color with their sight word flashcards? I have the PERFECT freebie for you.

FREE Printable Sight Word Labels

My classroom word wall reviews letter sounds while providing students with a visual anchor for the sight words they have already learned. Here you can see the sight words displayed beside each corresponding letter on the word wall.

Creating the word cards is EASY! To prepare, I just cut 3x5" pieces of brightly colored cardstock and printed the sight words onto Avery 5163 labels. When I am ready to create the word cards, I just peel the labels and stick them onto the card stock pieces.

FREE Religious Emergent Readers for Easter

Hello Freebie friends! Tomorrow is the first day of Holy Week and I created two FREE Interactive Sight Word Readers to help Catholic and Christian students learn to read and spell the word "Jesus" during the most blessed week of the church calendar.

If you're not already familiar with my Interactive Sight Word Readers, let me tell you ALL about these great little book. Each six-page booklet uses repetitive text and sentence structures to help children grow in reading confidence. A featured sight word is missing from all pages in the book. Students cut out and unscramble the letters (included in the packet) and glue them onto each page of the book to complete the sentences. If you're short on time, letter stamps can also be used or children can simply write in the missing letters.

Two Versions for Catholic or Protestant Classrooms

Two separate books with a similar theme and the same clip art have been created to meet the needs of Catholic and Christian classroom teachers. Both versions are available for FREE on the Kinder-Craze blog. Stop by and grab the version that best suits your classroom needs.

Wishing you a blessed Holy Week and a Happy Easter!

FREE Lenten Interactive Sight Word Reader

Catholic and Christian teachers: integrate language arts into your Religion instruction with this FREE Interactive Sight Word Reader, "Lent Reminds us of Jesus."

Each page of this booklet uses predictable sentences to name Lenten symbols. The fun twist of the book is that all pages are missing the word "of". Students complete the booklet by cutting out letters to correctly spell "of" and glue them into the book. It is a sweet way to foster faith development while also building reading skills.

Have a blessed day!

Stamping Sight Words

Alphabet stamps are a fun addition to any word work station. My students love to use them to practice building and reading their words. One of their favorites is stamping sight words in these little booklets.

These booklets help my students be successful in reading because they are predictable sentences with lots of visual clues to help them decode unknown words. They focus on one sight word per book, but they are full of other sight words we have learned along the way!

I store the alphabet stamps in little ice cube trays to keep them organized!

I also added a little alphabet sticker inside the trays to help my students put the stamps back in the correct spot.

They love it and I love it!

This book, We Can Do A Lot, is there for free. Just print, cut along the dashed lines and staple together!
