the daily five (free classroom resources!)

Hi Freebielicious Friends!

I recently wrote all about how excited I am to dive into the Daily 5 this upcoming year over at my blog. I also shared LOTS of resources there, but I wanted to share them here, as well (just in case anyone missed them!). I hope you all can use these in your classroom!

I am beyond excited to begin implementing The Daily 5 into my classroom this year. Actually, our ENTIRE school is!

I have read it cover to cover TWO TIMES, and taken many notes! I plan on reading it again before the beginning of the year.

Here are my questions for YOU:

Have you read the book? Do you use it? Do you like it? What don’t you like? Tips?

I wish we could go grab a cup of coffee and gab for hours! That would be so fun!
As I read through the book the second time, I jotted down some things I wanted to make prior to the beginning of the school year to help me feel a little more prepared!
Because I love you all so much, I’m sharing them here with you guys too!

Check out some free resources below:

After reading the book, I fell in the love with the “Check for Understanding” idea. If you’ve followed my blog for awhile, you know that I make anything and everything into a pretend character. So, I felt Mr. Check In (NOT Mr. Chicken) was a must-have in my classroom this year. You could even make him into a fun “reading craft,” if you’d like.

I LOVE I PICK! What a great way to encourage independence in the classroom. I made this fun sign and these cute little bookmarks. I plan on printing the bookmarks and placing them in each child’s book bin.

You’ll find this cute poster and a “good fit” shoe activity in the download, as well.

Plus, this cool 3 Ways to Read a Book poster. I plan on displaying this near my library so that my kids can refer to it all year long.

image

I also made this recording sheet to help keep me sane! I laminated it so that I don’t have to reprint each week!

These fun reading posters (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing) will also hang in my classroom on my Daily 5 wall (I haven’t quite figured all of the details out yet!). And, I’ll definitely be using the mini-rotation cards to keep us all on track.

  7. Awesome! I'm implementing this year, too! Nervous and excited. We are a digital 1:1 system, so I'm really looking at creative ways to combine print and digital together. Looking forward to following your journey.

  14. I LOVED the Daily 5 book that you posted. When I would introduce a new part of daily 5 I would sit with it in my lap and pretty much read word for word from the book, so I wouldn't introduce it wrong. The sisters have a website with a lot of videos on it. It is very worth getting a subscription for you and your coworkers to share. It has some really good resources and videos on how to implement Daily 5. It is amazing to see how the kids grow and build their "stamina" throughout the year. I hope you have a great experience implementing it!

  15. I've been thinking about starting it in my Kinder class. I have the book on my iPad and I am a little nervous to try it out, but everyone I've asked has GREAT things to say about it!

  16. I absolutely LOVE the Daily 5 and will never go back to centers! You will love it! The students are independent and quiet. Last year, I integrated technology with the Daily 5 and the students were even more motivated. I used the computers in my class for Listen to Reading and I had 6 I-pads that I could use in the Word Work station or in small groups with me.
See my blog for the websites I used for Listen to Reading. I hope this is helpful.

  18. I have been using daily 5 and CAFE for 4 years in my kindergarten class. I LOVE IT!!!!!!! My biggest suggestion - take it slow and build the stamina. It has taken 5-6 weeks each year. Follow the guide at the back of the book - I do every year. You get so much time back by making sure their muscle memory is strong. My second suggestion - subscribe to their site - the videos are worth every penny you pay when you are first starting.

  19. Wow! What a great freebie! Thank you so much for sharing. This will be my 2nd year of implementing D5 and your resources will certainly come in handy!

  20. First, Mr. Check In is *AWESOME!* You are awesome for offering all the amazing freebies!

Last year was the first year I implemented Daily 5 and I loved it! The students would complain if we couldn't do Daily 5 or had to cut time short for assemblies, etc.

    Confession: I never liked centers.

I know, I know. I'm a primary teacher who hated centers. This book was my saving grace! The kids LEARNED and I didn't have to regulate centers all morning. I do pull in games and some center type activities for Work on Words (Roll-Say-Keep and Elkonin boxes to name two.)

I am really looking forward to year 2 with Daily 5. I am impressed your entire school is using it. That will be powerful! I am following your blog to keep up to date with your class!

  21. I started doing Daily 5 and CAFE last year and love everything about it. Thank you for the resources! Most days we only do a Daily 2 or 3 but that is OK! I went to the "Sisters" conference in Charlotte this summer - it was a WOW! Best conference I have ever attended and let me tell you, I have been to a lot in 30 years! You should SO go if you ever have the chance.
