Saint Patrick's Day Science Experiment

Hello everyone! Kristen here from A Day In First Grade! I wanted to quickly share with you our newest "rainbow" Science experiment.

This past week we have been having a blast learning about Saint Patrick's Day and culminated our week with a fun science experiment!

To complete this science experiment you need:
bowls
water
3-4 skittles for each kid! (So easy, right?!)

Add enough water into each bowl to cover the skittles. Drop them into the bowl so that they are in the shape of a triangle or a square. Try to have your students place the skittles in the bowl so they are close to the edges. Finally DO NOT MOVE THE BOWL!!! What happens next is awesome! We did the experiment whole group so that my students would know what to do and then I let them try it on their own.

After their water changed colors, they drew what happened!

Fun with Penguins

Hi ya’ll! Mrs. Hoffer here!! I just wanted to drop by and share a freebie and some activities for you to do with your students this week!

One of my favorite things to do is talk about blubber!! I take two ziplock bags, turn one inside out. Then put crisco between them. I let the kids dunk their hands in ice water with and without the “blubber” .

We also like to watch the penguins on the SmartBoard. We found a rookery at the

They are so funny and the kids are fascinated!! (This little guy liked the camera and was constantly peeking at it!)

One of their favorites is to see if they are taller or shorter than an Emperor Penguin. I traced a big old penguin on black paper. We keep track with tally marks on the board, on who is taller and who is shorter.

Then I have this freebie over at TeachersPayTeacher. My kids love it too! This is a splash game! The kids draw a card, read or identify the number. If they identify right, they get to keep it. If it is wrong, they have to put it back in the pile. If they draw a splash card, they have to turn all their cards back in!

Space Activities And Freebies!

Hello Everyone, This is Kristen from A Day In First Grade. Last week my class blasted off into space and could not be more excited. To make my space unit come to life, we completed a bunch of science activities.
For a writing activity, we taste tested space food and came up with fantastic adjectives to describe the way that it looked, smelled, and tasted.

My first graders LOVED this activity!
Throughout the activity, they filled out a recording sheet with their very best adjectives.
After we taste tested three different types of space food, we graphed which one we liked best!
To get free recording pages to go along with this activity, two free readers about the moon AND two ideas for science activities that you can use while studying the moon, head on over to my blog!

Simply click on the button below to read more about these activities and to get your freebies!

Hi Freebielicious Friends!
I hope the new school year is treating you well. It's hard to believe that it's already near the middle of September -- apple time!!

I'm here today with a new freebie that will fit in just perfectly with any apple-themed unit you use. It's actually a five senses pack. We use apples to investigate using our five senses -- hearing, smell, touch, sight, and of course the best part is TASTE.

This is a mini-poster pack with descriptive words that will help you and your little ones describe what you hear, smell, touch, see, and taste! I've also included printables so your kiddos can write what they experience.

Click HERE to grab in my TpT store.

After you grab the freebie, I'd love for you to pop over to my blog and check out everything there too!

Have a great school year!

Spiders

We will be learning all about Spiders next week.  This is always a popular week, especially for the boys.  They love seeing all of the "real" pictures in the nonfiction books.  Even though most of the pictures are gross, spiders don't really bother me to much.  {However, you will NEVER catch me teaching a unit about snakes or reading a snake book.  Sorry.  Just won't happen.  I am absolutely t-e-r-r-i-f-i-e-d.}
Here is a spider freebie for you if you are teaching about spiders anytime soon.  Just click on the pictures to download.

Enjoy!

Bats

Hey! I'm so excited to be a part of these new blog. It's going to be such a great resource for PK-1st grade teachers!!
I'm here to share some bat freebies with you. I love teaching about bats so I hope you'll enjoy these as much as I do.
While you're over at my blog, you may also want to check out these Informative Writing freebies as well.
Enjoy!
